BROOKINGS – The City of Brookings will officially dedicate its new South Main Avenue Fire Station located at 319 26th St. S. on April 5. The public is welcome to attend the dedication and open house from 5-7 p.m. with a ribbon cutting and official dedication program at 6 p.m.
Designed by JLG Architects and built by Clark Drew Construction, the South Main Fire Station accommodates four apparatus bays for three engines and one rescue boat, support space, and a display area for the department’s vintage 1940 GMC Firetruck.
The new station provides additional height to raise the apparatus during service and includes large glazed overhead doors and transom windows to draw natural light into the space and limit the need for artificial light.
The construction cost $1.49 million and took approximately eight months to complete. Future expansion can be accommodated by doubling its size to the west.
The new facility is strategically located in south Brookings in an effort to minimize emergency response time to the most rapidly growing area of Brookings.
This is one of four emergency response stations operated by the Brookings Fire Department. The previous response station, located at 32nd Street South, has been decommissioned and will be converted to a training facility for the fire department.
