BROOKINGS – A remnant from the past came down Tuesday morning when Prussman Contracting demolished the small building on the southeast corner of Sixth Street and Main Avenue. The site was previously a Bozied Conoco Station from 1950 to 1980 and was then sold and remodeled to become BankFirst in 1980.
“Just really glad to have it out,” said Mike Tietjen of American Family Insurance, who owns the building now. “I didn’t utilize it whatsoever. It hid my entire building and took so much space up in the parking lot.”
Tietjen plans to patch where the building sat and gain a lot more parking.
“I’m just excited because it’s gonna offer a lot more visibility to my building, offer a lot more parking for the VFW folks and my clients. It’s gonna be a really good deal,” he said.
The building removal is part of a conversation Tietjen had with the South Dakota Department of Transportation about the construction project to widen Sixth Street from Main to Medary avenues in 2020. The DOT wanted to close the Sixth Street exit to American Family’s lot, and Tietjen said his clients would have nowhere to turn around in that small lot to get out on Main.
“They said, ‘How can we remedy that?’ I said, ‘Tear that teller building down,’” Tietjen said.
Not only did the DOT agree to cover the cost, they also told Tietjen it could be done now.
