The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 113,065 (232 new – 138 confirmed plus 94 probable) as of midday Thursday, according to the South Dakota Department of Health.

Of the statewide cases, 2,056 are classified as active (up by 63 from Wednesday). The SDDOH website reports 312,421 people (909 new) have tested negative in South Dakota.

The new deaths, one woman and two men, are being reported in Davison, Minnehaha and Moody counties. The age ranges of the deceased are two 70-79 years and one in the 80-plus years category.

Increases in positive cases Thursday include, but are not limited to, 20 in Beadle County, 10 in Brown, five in Codington, 23 in Lincoln, 44 in Minnehaha, 24 in Pennington and 10 in Roberts.

In Brookings County, 6,824 vaccine doses have been administered to 4,866 people.

The figures released by the state Department of Health do not include individuals who are asymptomatic or have symptoms of the coronavirus but are not being tested.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.
