ELKTON – A garage and vehicle were deemed a total loss after a weekend fire in Elkton, according to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
The fire was reported at 4:30 a.m. Sunday and occurred in the 600 block of Antelope Street South in Elkton, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring said.
“It was found that the owners of the home had parked their 2003 Ford Escape in their garage, which is attached to their home, at around 9:30 p.m. on (Saturday). They advised that they awoke to smoke in their home around 4:30 a.m.,” Sebring said.
“They opened the door to the garage and observed heavy smoke and flames coming from underneath the vehicle. Elkton Fire Department and Aurora Fire Department were able to extinguish the fire,” Sebring said.
“The vehicle and garage were a total loss. The home received smoke damage and the owner estimated the damage to be at least $50,000,” he added.
The fire is under investigation with the Elkton Fire Department and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
