BROOKINGS – About 75 first-graders at Hillcrest Elementary School in Brookings listen attentively and follow along in their own new books as Joni Schmeichel, assisted by her husband Nick Schmeichel, reads from “How to Help the Earth,” a Dr. Seuss story featuring the Lorax.
Following the Schmeichels’ reading, Sarah Darnall from Medary Acres Greenhouses gave each of the students a bookmark with a tear-off tab “good for one free packet of seeds.”
This marks the second year that the Schmeichels, who own and operate Sideline Productions, a video production services company, have distributed more than 300 books to first-graders at Hillcrest, Medary and Dakota Prairie elementary schools. Their goal is to pay back to the Brookings area community and to raise awareness of Earth Day, which falls on Sunday.
