Gloria F. McCarthy, 88, of Brookings, died Sunday, June 4, 2017, at the Brookings hospital.

Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Brookings. Visitation is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Rude’s Funeral Home, with a Liturgical Wake Service beginning at 7 p.m.

Gloria F. McCarthy was born on Nov. 12, 1928,in Merna, Neb., the daughter of Merle L. and Della E. (Cox) Parr.

Gloria graduated from Longfellow High School in Kearney, Neb., in 1946 and began her employment at the Kearney Loan and Finance Company where she remained for several years.

She married LaVerne McCarthy on Sept. 6, 1947, in Kearney. In 1956 they moved to Brookings, where they remained and raised their family. She was employed at the South Dakota Press Association for five years and at the Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce for 16 years until her retirement in 1990.

She was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Parish, a past member of the Business and Professional Women Club, and the Brookings Firemen Auxiliary. She enjoyed cooking, reading and music. She was grateful to have her children living close by and loved seeing her grandchildren growing up. Her great-grandchildren were a wonderful blessing, too, and she always enjoyed their visits.

Gloria is survived by her three sons, Tim (Donna) of Sioux Falls, Steve (Dawn) of Brookings and John (Linda Starr) of Reno, Nev.; four granddaughters; and five great-grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one grandson, Andrew McCarthy and her brother, Gerald Parr.
