BROOKINGS – One person was injured when a semi and pickup collided in heavy fog Wednesday, according to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
The accident was reported at 10 a.m. Wednesday and occurred at the intersection of U.S. Highway 14 and 458th Avenue, west of Volga, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring said.
Bradley Lafleur, 51, of Fargo, North Dakota, was driving a 2010 Freightliner semitruck and trailer and had stopped at the stop sign at 458th and Highway 14.
“The driver stated he looked both directions and couldn’t see anyone coming in the dense fog at the time,” Sebring said.
Lafleur began to turn westbound onto Highway 14. As he made the turn onto the highway, a 2006 Dodge Ram pickup truck driven by Christopher Hosmer, 46, of Volga, was traveling west on Highway 14, approaching the intersection with 458th Avenue.
“(Hosmer) was unable to see (the semi) while it was turning due to the fog,” Sebring said, resulting in the pickup colliding with the trailer of the semi.
Hosmer was transported to the Brookings hospital by private party to be treated for unknown injuries, Sebring said.
The semi sustained $250 worth of damages while the pickup sustained $6,500 worth of damages, he added.
