Holm to serve as honorary Relay for Life chair

Posted

BROOKINGS – Local cancer survivor Dr. Rick Holm has been selected as honorary chair for this year’s Relay For Life of Brookings/South Dakota State University.

Holm will join the more than 150 other participants on March 29 to help the American Cancer Society attack cancer from every angle. The event will take place at the Volstorff Ballroom on the SDSU campus and starts at 5 p.m.

Holm is a pancreatic cancer survivor who chooses to focus on living. He and everyone who is involved with Relay For Life Brookings/SDSU are hopeful for a cure and participate for that reason. Holm may be familiar through his medical questions program “On Call with the Prairie Doc.”

“I am pleased to be honored this year. Actually, I am pleased to be alive this year, this day, this hour. My cancer journey has given me the sense to appreciate what I have and to realize the value of connecting with people. I look forward to seeing you at this event.”

Founded by Dr. Gordy Klatt in Washington in 1985, the Relay For Life movement unites communities across the globe to celebrate people who have been touched by cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action for lifesaving change. Symbolizing the battle waged around the clock by those facing cancer, the event can last up to 24 hours and empowers communities to take a stand against cancer.

“This year’s committee is excited to have someone with medical knowledge and the experience of being a cancer survivor be our honorary chair and speaker,” co-chair Janice Nielsen said.

The event kicks off at 5 p.m. March 29 with recognition of local survivors. There will also be a supper at 6 p.m. and a luminaria ceremony at approximately 9:30 p.m.

This year, an estimated 1.3 million people in the U.S. will participate in more than 2,000 events to help the American Cancer Society attack cancer in dozens of ways, each of them critical to achieving a world without cancer – from developing breakthrough therapies to building supportive communities, from providing empowering resources to deploying activists to raise awareness. Funds raised support the American Cancer Society 24/7 cancer help line and free rides to chemotherapy.

All are invited to join or donate to the Relay For Life of Brookings/SDSU. Visit RelayForLife.org/brookingssd.
