Jackrabbits drill Bears for fifth win; Bison remain undefeated

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Former Bobcat Mikey Daniel made four trips to the end zone; Brady Mengarelli, Dallas Goedert, Taryn Christion and linebacker Christian Rozeboom had big games, and No. 13 South Dakota State scored 21 consecutive points out of the halftime break during a 62-30 defeat of Missouri State on Saturday afternoon at Plaster Stadium.

It marked the 100th win (against 63 loss) in the Division I era for the Jackrabbits, who recorded a program-high for points in an MVFC game.

Daniel had three 1-yard scoring runs to go with a 2-yarder as he finished with 32 yards on 10 carries.

Mengarelli picked up 115 yards on 11 attempts and scored twice.

Goedert totaled eight receptions for 170 yards with a TD.

Christion finished 14-of-19 for 323 yards with two touchdowns.

Rozeboom made a game-high 18 tackles.

Daniel scored from 2 yards out at the 10:50 mark of the third. Goedert added a 42-yard catch-and-run 5 1/2 minutes later. Mengarelli’s second TD came on a 17-yard run 8 seconds into the fourth and made the score 55-27.

Jake Wieneke ended up with 61 yards on three catches.

With 252 career receptions, he moved from tied for third to second in MVFC history – trailing only Western Illinois’ Lance Lenoir (273 from 2013-16) – and from tied for 25th to 22nd in the FCS ranks.

SDSU (5-2, 2-2) takes on Western Illinois on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Macomb, Ill.

Notes (from SDSU Sports Information): Christion is second in career total offense at SDSU with 7,617 yards. … Goedert is fourth in career receiving yards at SDSU with 2,464. … Mengarelli is ninth in career rushing yards at SDSU with 2,311.

Missouri Valley Football Conference

North Dakota State maintained its winning ways with a 24-12 defeat of Western Illinois in the Fargodome, while South Dakota suffered its first loss of the season 37-21 at Illinois State.

The two teams to beat South Dakota State this year – Northern Iowa and Youngstown State – squared off, with the Panthers prevailing 19-14 at home.

Southern Illinois handed Indiana State its 10th consecutive loss, 45-24.

All three of the Jackrabbits nonconference opponents – Duquesne, Montana State and Drake – picked up victories.

• North Dakota State 24, Western Illinois 12

FARGO, N.D. – Easton Stick had touchdown runs of 2 and 8 yards in the third quarter and the Bison held the Leathernecks scoreless in the second half to rally from a two-point halftime deficit.

NDSU’s third-quarter scoring drives were 11 plays for 75 yards and six plays covering 70 yards.

Stick finished 11-of-18 for 221 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Bruce Anderson ran for 93 yards and Stick 61.

WIU was limited to 216 yards and did not score an offensive TD.

NDSU’s Cam Pedersen opened the scoring with a 37-yard field goal early in the first.

WIU moved ahead 9-3 later in the first as Sam Cross booted a 32-yard field goal and Quentin Moon returned an interception 43 yards to paydirt.

Stick found RJ Urzendowski, who totaled 100 yards on four catches, for a 58-yard score with 2:31 left in the second. Nathan Erickson’s 52-yard field goal put the visitors up 12-10 at halftime.

The Bison’s Tre Dempsey had a pick and Cole Karcz totaled 1 1/2 of the team’s five sacks.

The Leathernecks’ Brett Taylor totaled 17 tacles and Justin Fitzpatrick recorded the team’s other INT.

Total offense: NDSU 66 plays-402 yards (48-181 rushing/11-18-221 passing), WIU 51 plays-216 yards (23-31 rushing/17-28-185 passing). Turnovers: NDSU 2 (2 INT), WIU 1 (1 fumble). Time of possession: NDSU 34:16, WIU 25:44.

• Illinois State 37, South Dakota 21

NORMAL, Ill. – The Redbirds racked up 331 rushing yards and James Robinson scored on an 87-yard run to make it 34-21 with 5:42 to go as Illinois State celebrated homecoming by handing the Coyotes their first loss of the season.

Sean Slattery’s field goal with 1:36 left provided for the final margin.

Robinson finished with 193 yards and two TDs. Markel Smith added 92 yards.

Jake Kolbe went 12-of-19 for 236 yards with two TDs and an INT. Spencer Schnell racked up 191 yards on seven receptions and scored twice.

USD’s Chris Streveler ended up 39-of-63 for 440 yards with two scores and a pair of picks – his first turnovers of the year – and added 29 rushing yards.

Kolbe had TD tosses of 64 and 5 yards to Schnell in the opening period. USD pulled even in the second as Streveler hit Brett Samson for a 50-yard score and Aaron Ramsey for a 2-yarder.

Sean Slattery’s 47-yard field goal put the Redbirds up 17-14 at halftime.

Robinson found the end zone on a 14-yard rush at the 1:41 mark of the third to push the margin to 24-14. USD pulled within 24-21 on Kai Henry’s 12-yard run to the end zone with 13:30 remaining in the game. ISU went up 27-21 on a 33-yard boot by Slattery with 9:21 to go, before Robinson sealed the deal with the big TD run.

The Redbirds’ Davontae Harris had 11 tackles and an interception Alec Kocour picked off a pass and Dalton Keene tallied a pair of sacks.

The Coyotes’ Andrew Gray notched 10 tackles and recovered a fumble, while Phillip Powell had an INT.

Total offense: IlSU 66 plays-567 yards (47-331 rushing/12-19-236 passing), USD 88 plays-554 yards (25-114 rushing/39-63-440 passing). Turnovers: IlSU 2 (1 INT/1 fumble), USD 2 (2 INT). Time of possession: IlSU 34:24, USD 25:36.

• Northern Iowa 19, Youngstown State 14

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa. – The Panthers built a 19-7 lead with a few long scoring drives and then held off the Penguins down the stretch.

UNI’s Marcus Weymiller ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns. Eli Dunne finished 9-of-20 for 151 yards, as Daurice Fountain totaled 99 yards on three catches.

YSU’s Nathan Mays was 14-of-20 for 175 yards and Ricky Davis went 5-of-9 for 83 yards as both players threw for a score. Damoun Patterson (100 yards) and Alvin Bailey (85 yards) both had five receptions and a score.

The Panthers outgained the Penguins 181-47 on the ground.

UNI’s Sam Drysdale kicked a 23-yard field goal midway through the first. Weymiller made it 10-0 with a 1-yard TD plunge early in the second.

Mays and Patterson hooked up for a 41-yard score later in the period to pull the Penguins within three points. Weymiller’s second TD run, a 3-arder, gave UNI a 16-7 cushion at the half.

UNI’s three first-half scoring drives covered 78 (17 plays), 80 (12) and 79 (nine) yards.

Drysdale’s 28-yard boot at the 7:24 mark of the third made it 19-7.

Davis connected with Bailey for a 15-yard touchdown to pull YSU within 19-14 with 1:23 remaining in the game.

Weymiller had rushes of four and 10 yards to help the Panthers run out the clock.

UNI’s Rickey Neal (3 1/2), Keelon Brookins (two) and Hezekiah Applegate (two) combined for 7 1/2 of the team’s 10 sacks. Duncan Ferch, who recorded a sack, and Jake Hartford both came up with nine tackles. YSU’s Armand Dellovade made 15 stops, Kyle Hegedus 11, and Jalyn Powell and Lee Wright 10 apiece.

Neither team turned the ball over.

Total offense: UNI 67 plays-332 yards (47-181 rushing/9-20-151 passing), YSU 65 plays-305 yards (36-47 rushing/19-29-258 passing). Turnovers: UNI 0, YSU 0. Time of possession: UNI 29:12, YSU 30:48.

• Southern Illinois 45, Indiana State 24

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Sam Straub went 30-of-46 for 352 yards with three TDs and three INTs for the Salukis in their homecoming win.

Darrell James, who scored, had seven catches for 154 yards and Raphae Leonard added nine for 104. Connor Iwema and Daquan Isom both added a TD catch. Isom also ran for 73 yards and a score, while D.J. Davis and Jonathan Mixon both added a touchdown rush.

Jeremy Chinn made eight tackles and forced a fumble. Ryan Neal picked off two passes, and Airan Reed and Jaylin Wilson both recovered a fumble.

SIU led 17-14 after a quarter, 24-14 at halftime and 31-17 at halftime.

Both teams committed four turnovers. SIU ran 97 plays while possessing the ball for nearly 39 minutes.

The Sycamores’ Isaac Harker went 14-of-25 for 206 yards with a TD toss to Bob Pugh, who picked up 92 yards on four catches, and two INTs. LeMonte Booker ran for 47 yards and a score.

Katrell Moss made 20 tackles, Jonas Griffith 15, Brento Lockett 13 and Jordan Jackson 10. Anthony Tucker picked off two passes and Rondell Green one, while De’Jaun Tyson recovered a fumble.

ISU has lost 10 games in a row.

• Duquesne 24, St. Francis Pa. 7

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Tommy Stuart went 15-of-22 for 142 yards with a touchdown and also ran for a score as the Northeast Conference co-leading Dukes (6-1, 3-0) beat the Red Flash (4-3, 2-1) for their sixth straight win.

Both teams went 5-1 in league play last year to share the title, but St. Francis won the head-to-head and earned the automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs.

A.J. Hines ran for 123 yards. P.J. Fulmore ran for a TD and Chavas Rawlins added a touchdown reception.

Duquesne held a 377-153 advantage in total yards of offense and forced three turnovers while not giving the ball away. The Dukes led 10-7 after a quarter and 24-7 at halftime.

• Montana State 27, Northern Colorado 24

GREELY, Colo. – The Bobcats (3-4, 3-2) outscored the Bears (2-4, 1-3) 20-3 in the second half as Gabe Peppenger’s 27-yard field goal as time expired lifted Montana State to the Big Sky Conference victory.

MSU outgained UNC 519-259 in total offense.

Chris Murray was 20-of-35 for 222 yards with a TD and two INTs while adding 150 rushing yards and a score.

The Bears’ Conor Regan had two TD tosses, including an 80-yarder to Frank Stephens.

Trailing 21-7 at the half, MSU’s Gabe Peppenger kicked a 20-yard field goal in the third. Troy Andersen scored on a 15-yard run and Murray on a 4-yarder (to cap a 94-yard drive) in the third. UNC’s Collin Root knotted the tally at 24-all with a 34-yard field goal with 6:05 remaining in the game.

• Drake 19, Marist 14

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Bulldogs (4-3, 3-1) stayed in the hunt in the Pioneer League with a hard-earned win over the Red Foxes (3-5, 2-3).

Danny Donley made four field goals – the long being a 30-yarder. Brock Reichardt scored on a 2-yard run.

Grant Kraemer went 12-of-19 for 144 yards but left the game following an injury on Drake’s first possession of the second half.

• Sacramento State 34, North Dakota 27

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Ale Roman went 13-of-19 for 263 yards with two TD tosses to Andrew Linsey, who totaled four catches for 154 yards, as the Hornets (4-3, 2-2) defeated the hapless Fighting Hawks (2-6, 1-4) in a Big Sky Conference matchup.

SSU pulled away from a 10-all tie by outscoring UND 24-7 in the third stanza. Marcus Bruce returned a fumble 25 yards to paydirt in the big period.

De’mun Mercer (five catches-115 yards) and Noah Wanzek (8-100) both caught a TD pass from Andrew Zimmerman for the Fighting Hawks, who turned the ball over three times.
