KANSAS CITY – UMKC dropped South Dakota State 1-0 in a nonconference women’s soccer match Sunday afternoon at Durwood Soccer Stadium.

"I was really disappointed with how we started the game, and that's on me as a coach to ensure we play better from the opening whistle," SDSU coach Brock Thompson said. "After the penalty kick, I thought we responded well and it's important for us learn from these games as we move forward."

The Jacks, who trailed in the day's shot count 9-3, withstood numerous Kangaroo attacks but kept things scoreless in the opening period as Maggie Smither recorded three first-half saves.

SDSU pushed the tempo early before momentum swung to the UMKC offense, and was unable to record its first shot of the day until the 45th minute when Kelsi Wipf put a free kick from 40 yards out on net.

Out of the locker room, the Jackrabbits looked to take back control but were dealt a 1-0 deficit at 47:48 on a penalty kick goal by UMKC's Lexie Howard.

The final 40 minutes of regulation saw SDSU put together several scoring threats, including a pair of shots from Jennie Scislow at 60:40 and Leah Manuleleua in the 80th, but UMKC thwarted both efforts.

The Kangaroos improved to 2-2.

SDSU (1-3) plays host to Iowa State on Friday at 6 p.m.
