BROOKINGS – A Brookings man was arrested Sunday for allegedly making terrorist threats online, according to Assistant Chief Derrick Powers of the Brookings Police Department.
Court documents identify the suspect as 18-year-old Kyle Hendrix. He’s facing a Class 5 felony charge of terrorist threat, punishable by up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Hendrix made an initial court appearance Monday. He is free on a $15,000 cash-only bond.
“Shortly before 9 p.m., the police department received a report about someone who was posting alarming messages on a social media site that caused people concern,” Powers said. “The individuals believed they were threatening in nature.”
Officers found and arrested Hendrix later that evening, and he was taken to the Brookings County Detention Center.
Powers said no one and no location was identified in the posts.
According to a BPD memorandum of arrest, a Twitter account linked to Hendrix had several tweets on Sunday, and they allegedly stated, “the cards are on the table and the bullets in the guns, false accusation have led to this, and my guns aren’t on paper.”
Powers said multiple people contacted the police department regarding the posts.
“One person may view it as threatening, other people may not. Certainly they were alarming, where we were contacted by several individuals (reporting it),” Powers said.
