BROOKINGS – Brookings Police have arrested a man after a baby was brought to the local hospital with injuries that required the child be airlifted to Sioux Falls, according to Lt. Derrick Powers.
Brookings Health System called officers Monday evening for an 8-month-old baby that had “concerning injuries, which they thought were consistent with being caused by abuse,” Powers said.
“(Medical professionals) are mandated to report these types of things when there’s suspected abuse, to law enforcement,” he said.
The baby boy was airlifted to Sioux Falls “because of the status of the injuries, because of the seriousness of them,” Powers said, adding the child was still in the hospital as of Wednesday morning.
Officers talked to a 21-year-old Brookings man who had been taking care of the child prior to the trip to the hospital. Powers would not say if the man was related to the baby.
The man was arrested Tuesday evening for abuse or cruelty to a minor under 7 years of age, which is a Class 3 felony, Powers said. Other charges are pending, he added.
“With the investigation, once it’s completed, the reports will be forwarded over to the state’s attorney’s office. They’ll determine what, if any, additional charges will be filed,” Powers said.
