BROOKINGS – South Dakota’s music educators will meet for performances, workshops and discussions for the South Dakota In-Service Music Conference Feb. 8-10.
The conference, hosted by South Dakota State University, will have approximately 1,000 students of all ages performing.
Running concurrently with the conference are the South Dakota Bandmasters Association annual meeting and SDSU Choral Day.
Evening concerts held Feb. 8 and 9 are free and open to the public at the Performing Arts Center on the SDSU campus. Concerts will be at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 8 and 7:30 p.m. Feb. 9.
The 50th annual Choral Day, scheduled for Feb. 8, features a 4:45 p.m. performance by the Elementary Festival Honor Choir directed by Briar Cliff University’s Sean Burton and a 7:30 p.m. concert by the Festival of Men’s Voices directed by Ball State University’s Andrew Crow.
Burton is a veteran of public school teaching who holds a doctorate in choral conducting from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is the conductor of the Siouxland Youth Symphony and previously served as conductor of the Bel Canto Nebraska Children’s Chorus.
Crow has taught at Ball State University since in 2009. He holds a doctorate in choral conducting from the University of Minnesota.
Other vocal groups performing during Choral Day include the Pipestone, Minnesota, Area High School Choir, Sioux Falls O’Gorman High School Concert Choir, Sioux Falls Roosevelt High School President’s Men, and the Tea Area High School Concert Choir.
John Mackey, a New England-based conductor and composer, headlines the bandmasters association annual meeting. Mackey originally studied at the Juilliard School and is a two-time recipient of the ABA/Ostwald Prize for band composition.
Percussionist She-E Wu will serve as artist-in-residence for the conference and will perform as soloist with the SDSU Wind Symphony during the 7:30 p.m. Feb. 9 concert. Head of the percussion program at Northwestern University, Wu tours the world as a soloist and teacher.
Other bands appearing during the conference include: the Brandon Valley High School Wind Ensemble, Lennox Junior High School Band, Sioux Falls Lincoln High School Band, Sioux Falls Roosevelt High School Band, the University of South Dakota Symphonic Band, and the West Central Eighth-Grade Band.
