BROOKINGS – A brand-new monument on the South Dakota State University campus was vandalized early Thursday, and Brookings Police are looking for three people in connection to the incident.
The damage was reported at 8 a.m. Thursday in the 800 block of Medary Avenue and occurred about 1:30 a.m. that morning, Lt. Derrick Powers said.
The report pertained to the “vandalism of a newly constructed monument outside the SDSU Foundation,” Powers said.
“At this point, we do have three individuals that we know were in the area at the time, one of which is known to have caused the damage, and we are currently working on identifying those individuals,” Powers said.
“What was damaged was an acrylic commemorative plaque that … identified particular sponsors for the monument,” which was unveiled last week, he added.
Damage is estimated in excess of $1,000, he said.
