BROOKINGS — Kaia Rose Madsen, the daughter of Alexandra “Alex” Madsen and Andrew Williams, was born at 12:52 p.m. on Jan. 2, making her the first baby of the new year at Brookings Health System.

BROOKINGS — Kaia Rose Madsen, the daughter of Alexandra “Alex” Madsen and Andrew Williams, was born at 12:52 p.m. on Jan. 2, making her the first baby of the new year at Brookings Health System.
Kaia is also a second-generation New Year's baby. She shares a birthday with her mom who was also a New Year's baby at the hospital she was born at.
“Her due date was Dec. 31. I thought she’d come around Christmas,” Madsen said. “I didn’t think it was going to be possible for her be born on my birthday.”
Madsen was induced on New Year’s Day. Since Kaia is Madsen's first baby, Madsen and Williams thought labor would progress slowly. Kaia, however, was ready to come out. Madsen ended up in labor for only five to six hours.
It’s special for mom and daughter to both share the honor of New Year's baby and the same birthday. However, according to dad, that’s not all they share.
“She has the same hair color, eyes and nose as Alex,” said Williams. “We knew she had her mom’s nose from the ultrasound. On a side profile picture, I told Alex, that’s one-hundred percent your nose.”
