Old Timers Day kicking off today in Volga, continues through weekend

Here’s the lowdown — there’s a hoedown throwdown this weekend in Volga: It’s the brainstormed theme of the 2023 Old Timers Day Committee.

Actually, despite the annual gathering always being billed as a single, named one-day celebration, the events go over four days. They began slowly this Thursday morning with the Bankstar Financial cookout and mixer, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and continue this evening with the Old Timers Day Mixer at CC’s Bar & Grill, from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

Come Friday, the pace picks up with all-over-town rummage sales; check out the map in today’s Volga Tribune. At 7 p.m. there’s partying at the Meadow Green Golf Course: free ice cream, courtesy of the Tribune, music by Pro-King Entertainment; grub trucks; And then … ?

Saturday, which is de facto Old Timers Day, brings back a bunch of OTD favorites: the Legion Pancake Feed at CC’s Bar & Grill; your-own-pace race, starting at 8 a.m. on Kasan Avenue; and the No. 1 OTD event, the parade, with this year’s theme, beginning at 11 a.m. Hoedown Throwdown.

Meanwhile, there are activities aplenty in Doc and Roma Peeke Park: vendors and food trucks; “Lizzy Hofer Band,” a professional-level variety band, performing at noon and at 3 p.m.; a volleyball tournament throughout the afternoon and into the evening; and the Kiddie Tractor Pull at 1:30 p.m. on Kasan Avenue by City Hall.

And to wrap up the day, there’s the No. 2 OTD event: the street dance on Kasan Avenue, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. (Sunday). The dance is sponsored by the Volga Fire Department. Entertaining the hoedown guys and gals — who must be 21 to enter — will be “10 Miles from Nowhere,” a Sioux Falls country cover-band. Coolers are allowed, but no glass is permitted.

Come Sunday the pace is easy and laid back. At 7 p.m., there’s an old-fashioned hymn sing and ice cream social at First Reformed Church. Also ongoing over the weekend is free swimming at the Volga City Pool; and the County Museum is open all weekend.
