BROOKINGS – The annual Swiftel Center Classic tipped off on Wednesday with three girls’ games and one boys’ game as Hendricks, Deuel and Waubay-Summit picked up girls’ wins and Oldham-Ramona/Rutland downed Alcester-Hudson in boys’ action.

Oldham-Ramona/Rutland boys rally for a win in Swiftel Classic

BROOKINGS – The annual Swiftel Center Classic tipped off on Wednesday with three girls’ games and one boys’ game as Hendricks, Deuel and Waubay-Summit picked up girls’ wins and Oldham-Ramona/Rutland downed Alcester-Hudson in boys’ action.

The action continued today and concludes on Friday.

 Hendricks 30, Arlington 25

The Grizzlies overcame a six-point halftime deficit to pull out a 30-25 win over Arlington in the first game of the day.

The Cardinals led 7-2 after the first eight minutes and 15-9 at the intermission, but a 14-5 third-quarter surge by Hendricks gave the Grizzlies a 23-20 edge heading into the final frame as they pulled away for the five-point victory.

Hendricks finished 11-of-50 from the field for 22 percent while the Cardinals connected on 9-of-50 for 18 percent from the floor. The Grizzles forced 21 turnovers while turning the ball over just 13 times.

Sophie Johnson posted a double-double with a game-high 17 points to go along with 14 rebounds as Hendricks improved to 6-1.

Arlington, led by Makayla Nelson’s double-double of 12 points and a game-high 19 boards as the Cardinals won the battle on the glass, 46-40, dropped to 2-4 on the season.

The Cards play host to Estelline on Tuesday.

 Deuel 52, Oldham-Ramona/Rutland 15

The Cardinals used a strong second quarter to take control en route to a 52-15 win over Oldham-Ramona/Rutland in the second game of the Classic.

Leading 6-5 after one, Deuel went on a 19-1 run in the second for a 25-6 halftime edge. The Cards then put up 20 in the third while limiting the Raiders to just four points for a 45-10 lead through three to pick up their second win of the season against four losses.

Britney Lovre dropped 28 on 10-of-19 from the floor, including 6-of-12 from beyond the arc, to go along with two charity tosses to lead Deuel. She also had five rebounds, three steals and two dimes while Jaydyn TeGantvoort added 13 points, five assists and three steals. Kendra Damm chipped in with five points, six boards, three steals and an assist.

Victoria Malisch finished with six points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals to lead ORR, which dropped to 0-7 on the season. Khloe Tieman also had six points as Emily contributed nine boards and five steals for the Raiders.

ORR faces Elkton-Lake Benton on Thursday, Jan. 4, in Lake Benton while the Cardinals play host to Webster Area on Friday, Jan. 5, in Clear Lake.

 Waubay-Summit 55, Canby 35

The Mustangs put up 38 points in the middle two quarters to turn a close game into a 20-point rout in the third game of the Swiftel Classic.

Tied at 12 after a quarter, Waubay-Summit outscored the Lancers, 25-14, in the second to lead 37-26 at halftime; and then, limited Canby to just two points in the third to go up 50-28 heading into the final frame.

Makayla Zirbel posted a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds, to go along with three assists and a steal, for the Mustangs, who improved to 5-0 on the season. Zoey Wohlleber added 16 points, six steals and three dimes while Kelsey Pearson contributed 11 points and eight boards.

Kalli Jelen led the Lancers with nine points as Alyssa Beckius chipped in with six points and seven rebounds as Canby dropped to 1-5.

The Raiders knocked down 50 percent of their shots in the second half to rally from a three-point halftime deficit to pick up their second win of the season.

Alcester-Hudson led 15-11 after the first quarter and 24-21 at the intermission, but it was all ORR in second half as the Raiders outscored the Cubs, 33-9, over the final 16 minutes.

Hunter Breske scored 20 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead ORR while Jamus Brown chipped in with 16 points, six assists and two steals. Taylor Hojer pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with six points, two assists and two steals as the Raiders held a 39-20 advantage on the glass to improve to 2-3.

Eli Skoglund’s 16 points and four steals led the Cubs, who dropped to 0-5 on the season. Jaxon Doering contributed eight points and five boards.

On Saturday, ORR faces Estelline at noon in the Entringer Scholarship Classic at Brookings High School.
