‘Merry Christmas Dance’

The Brookings Area Singles Club will host the “Merry Christmas Dance” on Dec. 15 at the White Community Hall in White from 7:30 until 11:30 p.m.  

There will be music provided by the Norgaard Country Duo and the admission is $9 for members, $10 for all others and all must be over 21 years.  

There will be door prizes and we encourage all to bring snacks.   

New Year’s Eve Dance

The Brookings Area Singles Club will hold its “New Years Eve Dance” at the White Community Hall in White on Dec. 31 from 8:30 p.m. until 12:30 a.m.  

The dance music will be provided by the Norgaard Country Duo. The admission will be $9 for members and $10 for others.  There will door prizes and they welcome all who want to bring snacks to share.  

Takuwe exhibit

Brookings, through Feb. 6, 2019

The title for this exhibit at the South Dakota Art Museum is one Lakota word: Takuwe. In English: Why. The focus of the exhibit is the 1890 massacre of Lakotas at Wounded Knee, but it doesn’t begin or end with the killings. 

Its intent is to begin with positives and to close with a call to action.

The exhibition is divided into seven chronological sections, which are accompanied by the artworks, poetry and songs of contemporary Lakota artists. Additional information about the visual artists, poets and musical artists in this exhibition is available on the CAIRNS website: Takuwe.

Takuwe is curated by Dr. Craig Howe, Center for American Indian Research and Native Studies.

Rooted, Revived, Reinvented: Basketry in America

This exhibit at the South Dakota Art Museum is Curated by the National Basketry Organization in collaboration with the Museum of Art and Archaeology at the University of Missouri. Ninety-three objects in this exhibition provide an historical overview of American basketry from its origins in Native American, immigrant, and slave communities to its presence within the contemporary fine art world.

Harvey Dunn: War Works

This exhibit at the South Dakota Art Museum marks the 100-year anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I. 

This exhibition commemorates the anniversary of the end of the war with a series of artworks created by celebrated South Dakota artist Harvey Dunn.

The works on display are drawn from the collections of the South Dakota Art Museum and the National Museum of American History. 

Included are works Dunn created during WWI in his official capacity as a war artist as well as war-themed illustrations he created for stories, advertising and propaganda before and after his service.

This exhibit at the South Dakota Art Museum ends Dec. 30.

This exhibition of Paul Goble illustrations features stories of triumph and the heroes – both mortal and supernatural – who save the day. 

Books featured include Adopted by the Eagles, Buffalo Woman, Crow Chief, Dream Wolf, Death of the Iron Horse, The Gift of the Sacred Dog, The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses, Horse Raid, The Legend of the White Buffalo Woman, The Lost Children, and The Return of the Buffaloes.

Sons of Norway – Nordic Nimble Feet

The Sons of Norway is looking for adults and children to model the traditional Bunad for an evening. If interested call 695-6737 as soon as possible. It is the Sons of Norway meeting with a potluck meal. So bring a dish to pass, wear a Norwegian sweater or Bunad and bring a smile. The Nordic Nimble Feet dancers will perform and songs will be sung. It is a great opportunity to learn about the Norwegian culture
