BROOKINGS – The Brookings Police Department experienced a phone service outage at approximately 8:21 a.m. Friday and had a 45-minute disruption in calls, Police Chief Jeff Miller reported.
The outage meant some emergency or non-emergency calls to the BPD may have gone unanswered during that period.
Calls were rerouted following the 45-minute disruption, and the department’s dispatch center was fully operational later Friday morning.
“We were able to continue service by transferring incoming calls elsewhere within the building,” Miller explained Friday. “Full service was back up around 11 a.m.”
The chief said the disruption was a statewide routing issue, and the department worked with Swiftel and Comtec, its phone system provider, in solving the issue.
“Consequently some calls may have been dropped or never received. The disruption lasted about 45 minutes until we could get calls re-routed to another location. … We learned this was a statewide problem with Comtec, so we were not the only agency affected.”
Miller said the department will continue to work with the state and its vendor to investigate the issue.
