BROOKINGS – Homeowners surprised a burglar early Friday morning, but he got away and authorities are looking for him, according to the Brookings Police.
“It’s believed that he entered through an unlocked door,” said Lt. Derrick Powers.
Police are looking for a man described as 5-7 tall with a husky build and in his early 20s with short, dark hair. He was wearing a bright orange sweatshirt “which had a logo on the back, unknown what that was, and was wearing shorts, which were possibly khaki-style, dark in color,” Powers said.
The incident was reported about 5 a.m. Friday and occurred at a residence in the 1700 block of 15th Street South, Powers said.
“The homeowners were awoken to someone who was inside the residence. They found that the individual was rummaging through their belongings,” Powers said.
“They confronted this male individual and a struggle ensued between the homeowners and the male. They attempted to restrain him, which they were able to do for a short period of time. Just prior to teh residents calling 911, the male fled the residence on foot. One of the homeowners chased after him for a short distance,” he said.
“It was found that the male had taken money from the residence,” Powers said.
