BROOKINGS – A man was injured after a pickup struck his wheelchair as he was crossing a street, and charges are pending against the driver that hit him, according to the Brookings Police.

The accident happened about 1:40 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Second Street South and Main Avenue South, Lt. Derrick Powers said.

Richard Overby, 71, of Brookings, was crossing on the west side of Main Avenue South. He was in his motorized wheelchair in the crosswalk going north and had the green light, Powers said.

“From his statement, he had pressed the crosswalk button before crossing,” Powers said.

Daniel McCollough, 34, of Brookings, was driving his 2013 Chevy pickup northbound on Main Avenue South when he pulled into the left turn lane at Second Street South.

“The information was that the turn signal for that lane would have been flashing a yellow signal,” Powers said.

“The driver of this vehicle didn’t see the motorized wheelchair in the crosswalk and proceeded to turn left and hit the wheelchair as it was crossing,” Powers said. “I believe the collision knocked the wheelchair over and Richard, knocked him to the ground.”

The wheelchair sustained extensive damage and the pickup has very minimal damage, according to Powers.

The ambulance responded to the scene and transported Overby to the hospital with unknown injuries. McCollough was not injured, Powers said.

Charges are pending against McCollough, Powers said.

“Certainly, the pedestrian in the crosswalk that is crossing with a green light has the right of way,” Powers said. “(Overby) did have the right of way, but with this accident, the driver didn’t see the wheelchair in the crosswalk.”
