BROOKINGS – South Dakota State University Police Department officers are now better equipped to handle emergencies and keep SDSU safe thanks to a grant from Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation. The foundation recognized a critical need and awarded a $7,900 grant to purchase five new automated external defibrillators.
“We are extremely grateful to Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation and our local Firehouse Subs in Brookings for providing us with this grant and positively impacting our community,” said Sgt. Wade Oorlog, SDSU Police Department. “We are so grateful to be given the tools needed to continue to keep the students, faculty and staff of South Dakota State University safe and protected.”
The AEDs will be placed in patrol vehicles, replacing existing, aging units. Having these new AEDs will not only benefit the thousands of faculty, staff, students and visitors on campus each day, but also those in need off campus.
“The ability to provide aid quickly increases the likelihood of a positive outcome,” Oorlog said. “We respond to medical calls on campus and assist other agencies in the city and county. This equipment will allow us to train and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies. Many times, law enforcement is the first on scene, and the ability to render quality care is critical to saving a life. We take our duties seriously and wish to provide the best response and care possible to our community.”
