BROOKINGS – The City of Brookings has named Lt. Derrick Powers as the new assistant chief of police for the Brookings Police Department.

Powers is a 23-year veteran of the department and was promoted to lieutenant in 2007.

Brookings Police Chief David Erickson, who served as assistant chief before being promoted to chief in December, made the announcement Monday, saying Powers was best qualified for the position from a field of internal applicants.

“Assistant Chief Powers has been with our department for a total of 23 years and has served in a multitude of roles within the department,” Erickson said. “I am very excited to work with Derrick as we look to the future and to where we want to take the department. Derrick is very dedicated to this department and to this city, and it shows in his work ethic and the time he gives both on and off the job.”

Powers said he was excited about taking on the challenges of his new position.

“I’m looking forward to working with Chief Erickson and the employees of the Brookings Police Department to improve our department for the employees and to provide the best police service we can to the Brookings community.”

Powers has been serving as the lieutenant of Investigations since 2009. Prior to that, Powers served as a patrol officer, patrol sergeant and patrol lieutenant. He holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology with a minor in criminal justice from South Dakota State University. He begins his official duties immediately.
