Redfield-Doland claims 1B title

VOLGA – Redfield-Doland crowned just one individual champion – Cooper Baloun at 182 pounds – but the Pheasants had enough team depth to win the Region 1B team title with 141 points to Sisseton’s second-place total of 132. Webster Area finished third with 130 while Clark/Willow Lake finished fourth with 122.

Sioux Valley had 51 points for eighth as three Cossacks qualified for the Class B State Tournament in Sioux Falls – Aaron Elijah, Silas Larsen and Cadan Koerlin.

Kingsbury County placed 11th with 34 points as the Knights had two individuals qualify for the state tournament – Hadyn Gilbertson and Alec Dobson.

Gilbertson won the 113-pound title with a 3-1 decision over Potter County’s Carl Cronin. He advanced to the championship match with a first-round pin of Mason Jones of Britton-Hecla in 54 seconds and a win by fall in 1:42 over Sisseton’s Braimen Steen.

Elijah and Larsen placed second at 126 and 285, respectively, while Koerlin was third at 195 and Dobson finished fourth at 120.

Elijah opened with a win by fall in 2:38 over Levi Boyko of Britton-Hecla before pinning Potter County’s Lance Stuwe in 5:52 to earn a shot at the title match, where he lost an 8-2 decision to Trevor Pray of Groton Area.

After a first-round bye, Larsen won a 3-1 sudden victory decision over Webster Area’s Chase Sigdestad to advance to the championship match, where he dropped a 3-0 decision to Brandyn Anderson of Groton Area.

Koerlin also received a first-round bye, but then fell, 10-8, to Branden Roe of Redfield-Doland before coming back to win by fall in 2:27 over Potter County’s Preston Worth in the third-place match.

Dobson posted a 12-2 major decision over Easton Steinbach of Warner/Northwestern, but then lost by fall in the semifinals to Keenan Pikarski of Sisseton in 3:16. In the wrestlebacks, he posted an 8-3 decision over Faulkton Area’s Tate Schulte before losing a 9-2 decision to Hunter Kloos of Deuel.

The Class B State Wrestling Tournament is Friday and Saturday at the PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls.

Region 2B

BERESFORD – Flandreau’s Dylan Rice, Martin Ruelas, Austin Johnson and Kasen Grengs qualified for state at the Region 2B Wrestling Tournament on Saturday.

Rice won the 152-pound title, earning bonus points in each of his three matches.

Following a first-round bye, he pinned Marion/Freeman’s Conor Kopmann in just 14 seconds in the quarterfinals and Canton’s Kyle Laubach in 1:34 in the semifinals.

Rice capped his dominant day with a 17-1 technical fall against Howard’s Mitch Kramer. The match ended in 3:13.

At 126, Ruelas opened the day by pinning Tri-Valley’s Lincoln Burggraff in 1:22. He blanked Garretson’s Dominic Abraham 7-0 in the quarterfinals and picked up a 6-2 decision over Howard’s Zach Pardy in the semifinals.

Canton’s Dylan Hanisch picked up a 13-3 major decision over Ruelas in the title bout.

In the 220-pound weight class, Johnson had a bye in the first round and then pinned Tri-Valley’s Willie Heiberger in 5:06.

Canton’s Payton Smith edged Johnson 3-1 in the final.

Grengs got things going with a 9-3 decision over Beresford/Alcester-Hudson’s Ethan Reed in the quarterfinals at 195. After getting pinned in 49 seconds by Canton’s Devin Stork in the semis, he won by fall in 2:38 versus Elk Point-Jefferson’s Hunter Ewing in a consolation match.

McCook Central /Montrose’s Tanner Grocott topped Grengs 3-0 in the third-place matchup.

Also for the Fliers, Damon Bruguier (132 pounds), Brendan Ten Eyck (145) and Preston Keith (160) each went 0-2.

Canton scored 191 points to edge Beresford/Alcester-Hudson (190 points) for the team title, while Howard was third at 111. Flandreau finished seventh with 68.5 points.
