ARLINGTON – A driver allegedly left the scene of an accident in which a car landed upside down in a slough, and “impairment was found to be a contributing factor in the crash,” said Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring of the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

The accident was reported at 8:37 a.m. Wednesday and occurred on 201st Street, just west of 459th Avenue near Oakwood Lakes State Park, Sebring said.

“The vehicle was upside down in a slough at the above location. A search of the area was conducted, and the driver was not located,” Sebring said.

The driver, Lon Alan Swanson, 54, of Arlington, was located at his residence about a mile from the accident scene.

“It was found that Swanson was traveling eastbound in a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix and lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle then entered the south ditch, where it rolled onto its top into the slough,” Sebring said.

The Pontiac was totaled.

Swanson was arrested on suspicion of DUI-second offense, possession of marijuana, failure to report an accident, no insurance, and a seatbelt violation. 

Also responding were the Bruce Fire Responders, Brookings Ambulance and South Dakota Highway Patrol.

The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, Sebring said.
