Junior Varsity Boys

The Ranger JV kept their unblemished record intact with a pair of wins over Rushmore over the weekend with 5-1 and 6-1 victories to improve to 3-0 in league play.

Brookings plays host to Sioux Center (Friday) and Fremont (Sunday) with a trip to Oahe on Saturday.

 Brookings 5, Rushmore 1

The Rangers led 2-1 after one as Kane Kurtenbach tallied an unassisted goal and Riley Jacobsen found the back of the net off a Noah Drew assist.

Luc Bouchard’s second-period goal – with the assist going to Jordan Svobodny – made it 3-1 through two, before Noah Ronning tacked on a pair of unassisted third-period goals.

Philip Kuechenmeister finished with 11 saves as Brookings held a 51-12 edge in shots.

 Brookings 6, Rushmore 1

The Rangers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a period as Alec Rice tallied an unassisted goal before Carter Merritt cashed in on a power-play opportunity as Drew set up the goal.

Ronning scored twice in the second – the first on a power-play chance off a Nick Jonas setup and the second assisted by Merritt – and then, Jacobsen lit the lamp with the assists going to Kurtenbach and Svobodny as Brookings went up 5-1 through two.

Kobe Hai provided for the final margin with a third-period goal as Trevor Pederson earned the assist.

The Rangers outshot the Thunder, 74-10, with Kaden Gutormson coming up with nine saves.

Bantam A

The Ranger Bantams posted a pair of league wins – 11-0 over Sioux Center on Friday and 4-1 over Aberdeen on Sunday – to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Brookings travels to Pierre on Dec. 16 and Huron on Dec. 17 in its next action.

Trenton Pederson got the scoring started for the Rangers off a setup by Jacob Drew before Wes Koenig and Talon Richter tallied unassisted goals as Brookings led 3-0 after one.

Ashton Witte converted on a power-play opportunity less than a minute into the second off assists by Trenton Pederson and Koenig.

Richter then scored off a Brody Powers’ helper before Witte set up Logan Bortnem for a pair of goals.

Koenig made it 8-0 through two off another Powers’ assist.

Jesse Roberts found the back of the net off a Bortnem setup to open the third-period scoring, and then, Powers scored with the assist going to Koenig.

Bortnem provided for the final margin with a short-handed, unassisted goal as Kade Brecher earned the shutout win in goal with 10 saves as Brookings outshot the Tornadoes, 35-10.

 Brookings 4, Aberdeen 1

The Rangers dominated play by outshooting the Cougars, 40-6, as Holden Richardson picked up the win in goal with five saves.

Drew and Koenig scored less than a minute apart as Brookings led 2-1 after one. Pederson and Witte set up Drew’s goal.

The Rangers added a pair of power-play goals in the second by Bortnem and Richter as Witte and Bortnem earned assists.

14U Girls

The Ranger 14U girls split a pair of league games over the weekend, dropping a 4-2 decision to Watertown on Friday before shutting out Sioux Center, 8-0, on Sunday.

Brookings heads back to Watertown on Saturday for a rematch with the Lakers.

 Watertown 4, Brookings 2

After a scoreless first period, the Lakers took control with three goals in the second and then went up 4-0 just two minutes into the third before Savannah Barber found the back of the net twice – assisted by Taylor Hokenson on the first and unassisted on the second to provide for the final margin.

Watertown held a 33-17 edge in shots as Heidi Merriman finished with 29 saves for the Rangers.

 Brookings 8, Sioux Center 0

The Rangers took control right away – scoring five goals in the first period; adding two in the second; and then tacking on one more in the third – as the Brookings defense didn’t allow a shot on goal.

Jadyn Kuehl posted a hat trick in the first period alone as Julissa Peterson assisted on the first goal with the other two being unassisted.

Kiran Vugteveen scored off an Addie Ramlo setup before Maggie Dunbar lit the lamp off a Kuehl assist for a 5-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

Peterson pushed the lead to six goal off another Ramlo assist and then Raya Hesser scored with the assists going to Vugteveen and Hokenson.

Vugteveen finished off the scoring 3 minutes into the final period as Ramlo earned a playmaker with her third assist.

PeeWee A

The PeeWee A Rangers outscored their opponents, 37-2, to win three games over the weekend. Brookings opened with an 8-1 decision over Sioux Falls on Friday before taking a pair of games from Sioux Center on Saturday – 14-1 and 15-0.

The PeeWee A team travels to Huron for a pair of games on Sunday, Dec. 10.

• Brookings 8, Sioux Falls 1

Jack Merritt sandwiched a pair of goals around a Breck Hirrschoff tally as the Rangers led 3-0 after a period. Merritt’s first goal was unassisted as Hirrschoff set up the second while Miles Merhib assisted on Hirrschoff’s goal.

Brookings added four more goals in the second – Zach Struck (assisted by Eli Johnson); Hirrschoff (unassisted); Jacob Kahle (set up by Owen Schneider and Merritt); and Luke Honkomp (assisted by Hirrschoff) – as the Rangers pushed their advantage to 7-1.

Schneider provided for the final margin with a third-period score as Johnson earned the helper.

Addison Ronning picked up the win in goal with 26 saves as the Rangers held a 35-27 edge in shots.

• Brookings 14, Sioux Center 1

The Rangers dominated play, outshooting the Tornadoes, 60-6, with Ronning coming up with five stops.

Schneider sandwiched a pair of goals around a Struck score before Merritt lit the lamp as Brookings led 4-1 after one. Earning assists were Jacob Peterson, Hirrschoff (2), Kahle and Struck.

Schneider scored three times in the second, while Struck scored twice and Hirrschoff found the back of the net once with assists going to Honkomp, Merritt, Struck and Merhib as the Rangers forged to a 10-1 lead.

Johnson lit the lamp twice in the third as Peterson and Hirrschoff also scored, with Honkomp, Merhib (2) and Merritt setting up goals.

• Brookings 15, Sioux Center 0

The Ranger defense didn’t give up a shot while the offense scored eight times in the first; four goals in the second; and tacked on three in the third for the final margin.

Scoring goals in the first period were Johnson, Honkomp, Kahle (2), Hirrschoff (2), Struck and Schneider as Schneider, Johnson, Struck and Chase Karch earned helpers.

In the second, Merhib, Karch, David Brink and Struck scored with assists going to Merritt, Struck, Honkomp (2) and Johnson.

The third saw Merritt, Karch and Merhib light the lamp as Schneider and Kahle picked up assists.

PeeWee B White

The Rangers split a pair of weekend games with Rushmore’s top PeeWee squad as the Thunder won 4-2 on Saturday before Brookings bounced back with a 6-4 win on Sunday.

White travels to Watertown on Saturday for a two-game set with the Lakers.

• Rushmore 4, Brookings 2

The Thunder led 2-0 after a period and pushed their advantage to 3-1 through two as Cooper Deatherage tallied an unassisted goal for the Rangers.

Deatherage added another goal in the third – with Andrew Sternhagen and Cole Schaller earning assists – but it wasn’t enough as Rushmore matched it for the 4-2 final.

Brayden Bingham stopped 13 of the 17 shots he faced as Brookings finished with 27 shots on goal.

• Brookings 6, Rushmore 4

The Rangers got off to a 3-2 lead after one as Schaller sandwiched a pair of goals around a Carson Odde unassisted tally with Deatherage earning assists on both of Schaller’s goals.

The Thunder scored twice in the second to go up 4-3 through two, but Brookings rallied with three third-period goals to pull out the win.

Ren Jacobsen notched an unassisted goal to tie the game before Schaller scored twice – the first set up by Jacobsen and the second unassisted – for the two-goal margin.

Bingham finished with 17 saves as the Rangers had 19 shots in the game.
