BROOKINGS – Do you consider yourself a do-it-yourselfer? Do you enjoy building, inventing, making, problem-solving and experimenting?

Share your talents and inspire others at the second annual Maker Festival from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, on Kidoodle Way, in front of the Children’s Museum of South Dakota.

Nationally, the Maker Movement is a growth mindset that establishes platforms where access to technology, expertise, collaboration and learning-by-doing foster creative problem solving, innovative product development and an improved quality of life for everyone.

The Brookings Maker Festival was developed by Brookings Economic Development Corporation to highlight local makers and promote making as a way of life.

“We had great response last year with 26 makers participating in the event and over 200 community members attending,” said Jennifer Quail, director of entrepreneur support for BEDC. “Brookings residents young and old are encouraged to join this year’s festival and help us celebrate making.”

Attendees will see and experience making of all types, including high tech, arts and crafts, electronics, foods, woodworking and more. Sales at the family-friendly event are prohibited, according to Quail.

“Events like these are designed to promote the making culture in Brookings,” she said. “Our goal is to inspire openness to possibilities and encourage active participation in shaping our community.”

Those who wish to exhibit can register at startupbrookings.com or call 697-8103 for more information. Vision Brookings is sponsoring the festival, allowing exhibitors to participate at no charge.

The Maker Festival is part of BEDC’s Division of Entrepreneur Support, which supports the entrepreneurs and innovators of the Brookings region by connecting them with resources and services they need to advance their business ideas. One such resource is the Brookings Area Markerspace, a 2,475-square-foot shared workshop and creative space for product development, prototyping, researching, testing and experimenting created and managed by BEDC.
