BROOKINGS – Sarah Lippert, Brookings volunteer connections coordinator for the Helpline Center, recently announced the following opportunities for area residents to become more involved in the community through volunteering.
Brookings Backpack Project, tote delivery drivers
Brookings Backpack Project has a weekly volunteer opportunity. BBP is seeking a group or several individuals to deliver totes to the area schools on Thursday and/or Friday each week. There are a total of seven schools needing delivery. Four schools require delivery on Thursdays, and three require delivery on Fridays. Schools included are HeadStart, Brookings High School, Camelot Intermediate School and Medary Elementary. It would require a pickup, van or suburban.
Inter-Lakes Community Action Partnership, Volunteer Income Tax Assistant
ICAP’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is seeking volunteers to assist clients with filing tax returns. Volunteers are needed for Brookings County to assist individuals with filing their tax returns. Volunteers will be required to attend training and be certified. VITA offers eligible tax filers in Lake, Moody, Miner, Hamlin, Kingsbury, Clark, Lincoln, Turner, Codington, McCook, Grant, Minnehaha, Brookings and Deuel counties the opportunity to meet with volunteers trained by the IRS to process their returns. Eligibility is based on a household income of less than $56,000. All assistance provided is confidential, free and each participant receives copies of their return for record-keeping purposes.
Boys & Girls Club of Brookings, Willie Mac Basketball Tournament
The Boys & Girls Club is in need of 250-plus volunteers for its annual Willie Mac Basketball Tournament on March 22-24. There are jobs for basketball fans and non-basketball fans alike.
Brookings Interagency Council, volunteer board members
Looking for volunteers to serve on the Brookings Area Interagency Council Board, a United Way funded agency. The board oversees Camp Adventure (summer camp for special needs children) and STARS (a recreational and therapeutic horseback riding program for persons with disabilities). Responsibilities include attending at least four board meetings a year (evening meetings), willingness to oversee programs, recruit volunteers, fundraise and advocate for these programs.
