BROOKINGS – The state is reporting 165 new COVID-19 cases and no new deaths in South Dakota Friday.
Seven of the new cases are in Brookings County.
Brookings County cases have risen to 3,609 total cases (four new confirmed and three new probable): 3,509 of those people have recovered (four new), with 63 active cases (up by three) and 37 deaths (no change). A total of 11,935 people (43 new) have tested negative in Brookings County, and 127 people (no change) in the county have been hospitalized at some point, the state reported.
There are no COVID-19 occupied hospital beds at the Brookings Hospital, the DOH website reported Friday.
Brookings County remains in the “moderate” community spread category.
The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 113,229 (165 new – 127 confirmed plus 38 probable) as of midday Friday, according to the South Dakota Department of Health.
Of the statewide cases, 2,096 are classified as active (up by 40 from Thursday). As of Friday, 109,237 people have recovered (124 new), 6,681 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (17 new), 74 people are currently hospitalized (down by 13) for transmission-based precautions, and 1,896 people have died (no change).
The SDDOH website reports 313,260 people (839 new) have tested negative in South Dakota.
Increases in positive cases Friday include, but are not limited to, four in Brown County, six in Codington, 10 in Lincoln, 52 in Minnehaha and 12 in Pennington.
The SDDOH website reported midday Friday that 244,697 state-allocated doses of a COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to 158,135 people in South Dakota. Doses administered by Indian Health Services or federal entities are not included in the count.
In Brookings County, 7,047 vaccine doses have been administered to 4,896 people.
The figures released by the state Department of Health do not include individuals who are asymptomatic or have symptoms of the coronavirus but are not being tested.
For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.
