South Dakota Retailers Association asks shoppers to ‘Look to Local’ this holiday season

PIERRE – The South Dakota Retailers Association encourages shoppers to “Look to Local” for great selections and value this holiday season. Retailers across the state are well prepared to welcome customers.

“Local shop owners recognize that many people are being careful with their money this year, so they’ve been working extra hard to make sure they have an excellent inventory of quality items to meet the needs of their customers,” said SDRA Executive Director Nathan Sanderson. “We encourage shoppers to look locally for good service and good value for their money.”

Many local businesses look for ways to offer special gift options. At Wink’s Fine Jewelry in Brookings, Samantha Tupper says her store specializes in one-of-a-kind gifts.

“We offer a unique diamond trade upgrade program. People can trade in their old diamond earrings and get a new pair in a one-of-a-kind setting without paying the full price of an upgrade. It’s our most popular gift at Christmas.”

Dan Tribby of Prairie Edge in Rapid City said they have shifted to offering more locally and regionally made items.

“Our customers appreciate that they can find gifts that are made locally and are well crafted,” he said. “Customers don’t have a lot of extra money, so they are looking for quality, functional items, and we have plenty of inventory to fill that need.”

At Mrs. Murphy’s Irish Gifts in Sioux Falls, Dick Murphy expressed similar sentiments.

“I’m feeling very optimistic. People are starting to feel more positive, and they are buying things of quality that will last them for quite a few years. They enjoy giving that kind of a gift and receiving that kind of a gift as well.”
