Stop spending our money

I just read an article in the Brookings Register about the city council considering the Highway 14 (aka Sixth Street road project).

One portion stated that the City of Brookings is considering paying nearly $400,000 for a decorative lighting upcharge.

Seriously?  Really?

Is this the best option for the citizens of Brookings?  So, the State of South Dakota is providing lighting for the project (at no charge) – but the council wants the taxpayers to kick in an additional $400,000 for pretty lighting?

How in the world is this considered being financially responsible?  This is not their money, it is OUR money; $400,000 could build three or four Habitat for Humanity homes.  $400,000 can feed many, many people.  $400,000 can help citizens who cannot afford proper medical care many options.

But, the city council – who were elected to serve in the best interest of the citizens of Brookings – are considering spending taxpayers’ money ($400,000) – that the State of South Dakota is providing the state approved street lighting (at no charge) so the light posts look pretty?  Absolutely silly.

Wow: $400,000 in debt for something that is being provided for by the state.

Is the city council working for the citizens of Brookings? In this case, I think not.

Quit spending our money on unneeded items.  It’s OUR money.
