BROOKINGS – Three people were injured in a two-vehicle accident Sunday at the intersection of 22nd Avenue and the Highway 14 bypass, according to the Brookings Police.
The call came in at 12:52 p.m. Sunday, Assistant Chief Derrick Powers said.
April Poppen, 52, of Brookings, was driving a 2004 Chevy TrailBlazer north on 22nd Avenue. Donald Dohrer, 83, of Waconia, Minnesota, was driving a 2018 Chevy Equinox east on the Highway 14 bypass. Dohrer had a 78-year-old passenger, also from Waconia, in his vehicle.
“As he was approaching the intersection, April’s vehicle pulled out in front of him and the vehicles collided,” Powers said.
“The accident caused the TrailBlazer to overturn. All three individuals were transported to the ER by ambulance,” Powers said.
“All three were wearing seatbelts,” he said. “None of (the injuries) were believed to be life-threatening.”
“April was cited for failure to stop and yield at a stop sign,” Powers said.
He did not know the damage estimates on the vehicles.
Also responding were the Brookings Fire Department, SDSU Police Department, Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and Brookings Ambulance.
