139 new COVID-19 cases, 10 deaths reported in South Dakota

BROOKINGS – The state on Wednesday reported 139 new COVID-19 cases and 10 deaths in South Dakota in the past week. 

Three of the new cases and one death have been reported in Brookings County.

The data does not include at-home test results.

Brookings County cases have increased to 8,096 total cases (three new confirmed and probable): 8,032 of those people have recovered (five new) with 12 active cases (down by three) and 52 deaths (one new). A total of 221 people in the county have been hospitalized at some point (no change), the state reported.

The Brookings hospital has no COVID-19 occupied hospital beds, according to the South Dakota Department of Health website. The county is in the “moderate” community spread category. 

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 237,246 (139 new confirmed and probable) as of midday Wednesday, according to the SDDOH.

Of the statewide cases, 488 are classified as active (down by 49 from last Wednesday). As of this Wednesday, 233,865 people have recovered (176 new), 10,731 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (14 new), 41 people are currently hospitalized (down by two) for transmission-based precautions, and 2,893 people with COVID have died (10 new).

The new deaths, five women and five men, are being reported in Beadle, Brookings, Custer, Lawrence, Minnehaha (4), Roberts and Yankton counties. The age ranges of the deceased are one 40-49 years, four 60-69 years, one 70-79 years and four 80 years or older.

The SDDOH website reported midday Wednesday that 1,187,402 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered to 520,627 people in South Dakota, as reported to the S.D. Immunization Information System. 

In Brookings County, 46,829 vaccine doses have been administered to 20,393 people, the SDDOH website reports.

The SDDOH reports 71.9% of the state population age 5 and older has received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine from the state or federal allocation, 58.9% have completed their vaccination series, and 33.1% have received a booster dose.
