BROOKINGS – Tim Reed has been appointed chief executive officer and chief economic development director of the Brookings Economic Development Corporation, the organization announced Wednesday. Reed will assume responsibilities on Feb. 1.
Reed is a District 7 state representative and previously served as Brookings mayor for eight years. He has been serving as interim director/CEO since October.
Reed has previously worked in supply chain planning and information technology and as a development director for the South Dakota State University College of Engineering. He was a key leader in successful fundraising efforts for three building projects and an endowed professorship at South Dakota State University.
“The Brookings area has unique resources that are unparalleled elsewhere in South Dakota. Tim’s vision and leadership will help us leverage our assets for the next phase of Brookings area economic growth,” said Daniel Scholl, president of the BEDC board of directors.
Reed has wide knowledge of state and local policy as they impact on economic development, according to a BEDC press release. During his time as the mayor of Brookings, Reed led the city’s efforts in securing Brookings as the home of a $36 million cheese plant, Bel Brands. He was also awarded the SDSU Presidential Special Citation and Medallion by President David Chicoine for the efforts in campus and community relations, as well as the Larson Family Tourism Champion Award in 2016.
“During my time as an elected official, I have been active with economic development and look forward to continuing that effort as the leader of the BEDC. As a lifelong resident of Brookings, the economic growth and success of the area is personally important to me,” Reed said.
Reed received a Bachelor of Science degree in commercial economics with a computer science minor from South Dakota State University in 1988.
“This is an exciting time for Brookings. The BEDC board looks forward to working closely with Tim to make a lasting economic impact for our area,” Scholl added.
