ARLINGTON – A semitruck crashed and overturned into a body of water along U.S. Highway 14 east of Arlington Friday morning during a downpour.
The semi, driven by 29-year-old Casey Virchow of De Smet, was eastbound on Highway 14 at 6:39 a.m. Friday, 5 miles east of Arlington, said Tony Mangan, spokesman for the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
Virchow crossed the center line, and her 2002 Peterbilt semitruck collided with a westbound 2013 Chevrolet Silverado. The pickup’s 28-year-old male driver was not named.
Virchow’s semi “went off the roadway and overturned in a body of water. The pickup crossed the center line and came to rest on eastbound shoulder near the body of water,” Mangan reported.
There was heavy rain with low visibility at the time of the crash.
Both drivers were not injured, and both were wearing seatbelts. A single charge is pending against Virchow, Mangan said.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol responded to another accident in the Brookings area Thursday evening.
Mangan said a 2003 Chevrolet Express van was southbound on Interstate 29 near mile marker 143, 10 miles north of Brookings, at 5:36 p.m. Thursday. That’s when the van collided with a deer on the roadway.
No injuries were reported, Mangan said, and all occupants of the van were wearing seatbelts. No charges are pending.
