ELKTON — Two people were killed and a train derailed Friday night when a car struck the train already crossing the highway in Elkton, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
Names of the dead have not yet been released pending notification of family.
According to the release, a 2011 Kia Sorrento was traveling southbound on Highway 13. For unknown reasons, the Sorrento crashed through the warning arm in front of the train tracks and struck the train while it was already crossing the highway.
The Sorrento caught fire and the two occupants were trapped inside. Authorities were unable to tell which person was the driver and which was the passenger. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
The train derailed and crashed into a grain elevator.
SD Hwy 13 was closed for several hours and then reopened. Cornell Ave. will be closed for the next several days while derailed train cars are removed.
South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
