BROOKINGS – Victims of identity theft are often negatively impacted by fear, anxiety and loss of trust, according to the Identity Theft Resource Center. To help victims of identity theft and those who serve them, SDSU Extension is presenting a webinar at noon March 26.
The webinar will provide information on financial, physical and emotional impact of identity theft on victims, victims’ relationships with others and the impact of identity theft on communities.
“Reported cases of identity theft are on the rise. Thieves stole an estimated $16.8 billion in 2017 alone,” said Lorna Wounded Head, SDSU Extension family resource management field specialist, quoting a Javelin Strategy and Research statistic.
The webinar will be led by Axton Betz-Hamilton, assistant professor of consumer affairs in the Department of Consumer Sciences at South Dakota State University.
Betz-Hamilton will present information that will inform professionals to better meet the needs of their clients based on research focused on financial abuse within families, including familial identity theft and elder family financial exploitation.
