BROOKINGS – Bruce is celebrating its 26th annual Honey Days with undead insects. The theme for this year’s community celebration will be “Zombees.”

“We really wanted something different this year,” Community Club member Pennie Lutz said.

Starting Honey Days off from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday is the KCountry Cookout at Museum Park. The evening fun kicks off with a beanbag tournament at the ball diamond. Registration is on site at 6 p.m., and the action starts at 7 p.m. Bring your own partner. Each team member on the winning team will receive a mini bean bag board set.

Ending Friday night is Erik Apland and Shawn Cable performing at Museum Park and knockerballs at the kid’s park, both beginning at 7 p.m. Knockerballs is $10 per person and for ages 9 and older.

Lutz said the Apland and Cable show draws a bigger crowd during the weekend. Usually the two perform around Thanksgiving or Christmas time, but lately they have been performing during Honey Days. Concert admission is free-will donations; the money goes to improving the park that now has a stage with a roof.

“It’s an amazing show,” Lutz said. “You never know which way the performance is going to go.”

Saturday kicks off with a 5K run/walk or pedal at 7:30 a.m., with registration at 6:45 a.m. in the Bruce Community Center. For more information, call Denise Ulvestad at 691-1345.

Parade lineup will follow after the 5K at Grace Free Lutheran Church at 8:30 a.m.; call Jane Perry at 627-5698 for more information.

The parade will take place at 10 a.m. on Main Street followed with a burger feed and music in the park from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. presented by Them Guys.

Car show set-up starts at 11 a.m., with judging at 1 p.m. Lutz said organizers have noticed that the car show has become more popular through the years.

A co-ed volleyball tournament will take place at noon Saturday; call Dave Ulvestad at 690-5537 for more information. Beginning at 1 p.m. is a horseshoe tournament; call Bill McCracken for more information at 690-6423. Both are at the ball diamond.

Head back to the park for more food from 5-7 p.m. Saturday for a pork barbecue feed with a quilt raffle drawing and music from Plum Crazy. The night ends with Undercover performing at the street dance from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Main Street, ID’s are required.

Wrapping up the weekend of fun is the pancake breakfast at 9 a.m. Sunday put on by the Legion Post 200. That’s followed by a community church service at 11 a.m. at Museum Park.

Resuming Sunday is the co-ed volleyball tournament from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., plus the Dale Benz Memorial Horseshoe Tournament at 1 p.m. and cow pie bingo at 2 p.m., all at the ball diamond.

Ending Honey Days is the Town & Country softball game at 6:15 p.m.

Lutz said that the game between the country people and town people can get pretty competitive.

Both Saturday and Sunday features water inflatables, and wristbands cost $5.
