BROOKINGS – Two people have been arrested in recent alleged domestic assaults cases, and Brookings Police want to call attention to the fact that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
“We had two more domestic arrests here and I know that we had a couple last week, too,” Lt. Marci Gebers said.
One was reported about 7:06 p.m. Saturday and occurred in the 500 block of 12th Street South, Gebers said.
Curtis Borstad, 26, of Sioux Falls, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault domestic and transported to the Brookings County Detention Center, she said.
“Officers spoke with the female victim who stated that she had been attempting to leave (in a vehicle) and Curtis stopped her from leaving,” Gebers said.
“He punched her in the back and then grabbed her by her sweatshirt and strangled her multiple times with her sweatshirt,” Gebers said.
“Then he bit her on her arm. She did have visible injuries and he was determined to be the predominant aggressor,” Gebers said.
“She was evaluated by the Brookings Ambulance, but was not transported,” Gebers said.
The second incident was reported at 1:21 a.m. Sunday and occurred in the 1000 block of Western Avenue, Gebers said.
Garett Dumarce, 29, of Brookings was arrested on suspicion of simple assault domestic and transported to the BCDC.
“Officers were able to determine that Garett had struck a female in the face and knocked her out of a chair. She did have visible injuries, and he was determined to be the predominant aggressor and arrested,” Gebers said.
“(Alcohol) was a factor, for him,” she added.
