BROOKINGS – The state on Wednesday reported 971 new COVID-19 cases and five deaths in South Dakota in the past week. 

Thirty of the new cases and one death have been reported in Brookings County.

The data does not include at-home test results.

Brookings County cases have increased to 8,334 total cases (30 new confirmed and probable): 8,167 of those people have recovered (22 new) with 112 active cases (up by seven) and 55 deaths (one new). A total of 228 people in the county have been hospitalized at some point (one new), the state reported.

The Brookings hospital has no COVID-19 occupied hospital beds, according to the South Dakota Department of Health website. The county is in the “high” community spread category. 

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 243,269 (971 new confirmed and probable) as of midday Wednesday, according to the SDDOH.

Of the statewide cases, 2,780 are classified as active (up by 234 from last Wednesday). As of this Wednesday, 237,553 people have recovered (732 new), 10,985 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (41 new), 65 people are currently hospitalized (up by 13) for transmission-based precautions, and 2,936 people with COVID have died (five new).

The new deaths, three men and two women, are being reported in Brookings, Butte, Minnehaha (2) and Pennington counties. The age ranges of the deceased are two 70-79 years and three 80 years or older.

The SDDOH website reported midday Wednesday that 1,255,782 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered to 527,120 people in South Dakota, as reported to the S.D. Immunization Information System. 

In Brookings County, 49,298 vaccine doses have been administered to 20,572 people, the SDDOH website reports.

The SDDOH reports 73% of the state population age 5 and older has received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine from the state or federal allocation, 60% have completed their vaccination series, and 33% have received a booster dose.
