BROOKINGS – The state on Wednesday reported 1,182 new COVID-19 cases and two deaths in South Dakota in the past week.

Forty-two of the new cases and one death have been reported in Brookings County.

BROOKINGS – The state on Wednesday reported 1,182 new COVID-19 cases and two deaths in South Dakota in the past week. 

Forty-two of the new cases and one death have been reported in Brookings County.

The data does not include at-home test results.

Brookings County cases have increased to 8,421 total cases (42 new confirmed and probable): 8,249 of those people have recovered (31 new) with 116 active cases (up by 10) and 56 deaths (one new). A total of 229 people in the county have been hospitalized at some point (no change), the state reported.

The Brookings hospital has no COVID-19 occupied hospital beds, according to the South Dakota Department of Health website. The county is in the “high” community spread category. 

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 245,705 (1,182 new confirmed and probable) as of midday Wednesday, according to the SDDOH.

Of the statewide cases, 3,299 are classified as active (up by 198 from last Wednesday). As of this Wednesday, 239,466 people have recovered (982 new), 11,076 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (47 new), 66 people are currently hospitalized (up by 13) for transmission-based precautions, and 2,940 people with COVID have died (two new).

The new deaths, both men, are being reported in Brookings and Tripp counties. The age ranges of the deceased are one 30-39 years and one 80 years or older.

The SDDOH website reported midday Wednesday that 1,261,887 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered to 527,970 people in South Dakota, as reported to the S.D. Immunization Information System. 

In Brookings County, 49,510 vaccine doses have been administered to 20,592 people, the SDDOH website reports.

The SDDOH reports 74% of the state population age 5 and older has received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine from the state or federal allocation, 60% have completed their vaccination series, and 33% have received a booster dose.
