BROOKINGS – The Rev. Terry Anderson, pastor of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, places ashes on the forehead of a parishioner, with the message to “repent and believe in the Gospel.”

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a season of repentance in which Christians around the world are urged to prayer, fasting and almsgiving on the road to Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
