COLMAN – Deon Entringer and Marcus Heemstra combined on a four-hit shutout as the Colman A’s beat the Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks 2-0 in their Cornbelt League amateur baseball opener Wednesday night.
Entringer gave up three hits and a walk while striking out 11 batters in seven innings of work to pick up the win.
Heemstra struck out six of the seven batters he faced, walking the other, as he notched the save.
The A’s scored both their runs in the sixth, tallying three of their five hits in the decisive frame.
Leadoff hitter Billy Stitz got it going with a single before stealing second, third and home to make it a 1-0 game.
Austin Ross reached on a one-out single and stole second. Mike Preheim’s RBI hit pushed the margin to 2-0.
Entringer and Chris Meyer had Colman’s other hits.
Humboldt/Hartford’s Buck Needles went 2-for-4.
Seth Rockafellow pitched six innings in the loss, giving up two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts.
The A’s committed a pair of errors.
Colman (3-0, 1-0) plays host to Salem on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
