BROOKINGS – The Brookings High School Marching Band, “The Roar of the Dakotas,” previewed its newest marching show, “El Barrio,” on Saturday at the BHS sports complex.
Above, the band began its performance by marching out onto the field in parade formation. Most marching band competitions will have both the football field performances as well as parade performances.
Below 1, the color guard adds an additional Spanish flair during one of the flamenco-inspired songs as they wave flags pictured with roses.
Below 2, Drum Major Tori Deirsen conducts the band while the musicians stand in an arc-formation and march in place.
Part of the day’s event was to begin raising money for the new BHS Marching Band trailer, shown Below 4, by having a walking-taco feed. By June 2020, the band needs to have raised at least $14,000 to help cover the cost of the trailer. Their new trailer features new graphics, internal lighting, extra storage as well as extra safety features so students can put back their uniforms at night after performances.
Director Ronald Stary chose the Spanish-Harlem show theme of “El Barrio” for the band to play because next summer, the BHS Marching Band is traveling to New York City to showcase their musical and marching talents.
Just before the band performance, Mayor Keith Corbett, Below 4, made a proclamation alongside Stary, declaring Aug. 24 as Bobcat Marching Band Day.
