BROOKINGS – The Bobcat eighth-grade football team split with Harrisburg North on Tuesday at Bob Shelden Field to close out the regular season, with the A team winning 15-12 and the B team falling 28-12.
Austin Clark hit Breck Hirrschoff for a 6-yard touchdown toss with 2:49 remaining in the A game to lift Brookings. Owen Schneider’s PAT kick made it 15-12.
The Bobcat defense came through down the stretch, stopping the Tigers on the 11-yard-line to seal the deal.
Harrisburg opened the scoring with a 30-yard run midway through the first quarter.
The Bobcats answered at the 3:50 mark of the second on Jack Merritt’s 3-yard touchdown rush. Clark ran in the two-point conversion.
The Tigers used a 79-yard scoring scamper later in the period to grab a 12-8 lead at halftime.
Schneider recovered a fumble and Nolan Miles intercepted a pass for Brookings.
In the B game, Harrisburg had a 9-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion in the second quarter.
The Bobcats’ Junior Eberline found the end zone on a 42-yard run in the third.
The Tigers used TD runs of 48 yards late in the third (plus the two-pointer) and 33 yards with 6:55 to go in the fourth to grab a 22-6 advantage.
Eberline got loose for a 70-yard dash to paydirt 26 seconds later to cut the deficit to 22-12.
Harrisburg added a 60-yard touchdown rush with 5:50 showing on the clock and tacked on the two-pointer to provide for the final margin.
Both Brookings teams finished with 5-1 records.
