Bobcats host doubleheaders with Brandon Valley, Rapid City Stevens

The Brookings Bobcats hosted a pair of doubleheaders over the weekend, falling in both games to Brandon Valley on Saturday and splitting two games with Rapid City Stevens on Sunday afternoon.

Bobcats host doubleheaders with Brandon Valley, Rapid City Stevens

BROOKINGS — The Brookings Bobcats hosted a pair of doubleheaders over the weekend, falling in both games to Brandon Valley on Saturday and splitting two games with Rapid City Stevens on Sunday afternoon.

The Bobcats will return to action when they host another doubleheader against Sioux Falls Jefferson at Bob Shelden Field in Brookings on Tuesday. The first game against the Cavaliers will start at 5 p.m.

Saturday

Brandon Valley 10, Brookings 0

The Lynx got on the board in the top of the first inning when a run scored on Will Conrad’s error. Brandon Valley added two more runs on Ryland Carroll’s double later in the first inning and the Lynx took a 5-0 lead after back-to-back bases-loaded walks in the third inning.

Colton Padgett made it a 6-0 game with an RBI double in the top of the fifth inning and Brandon Valley added four runs in the top of the sixth scoring a run on Carroll’s second double of the game, two runs on a passed ball and an RBI single by Padgett.

Brink took the loss for the Bobcats, allowing six runs (two earned) on five hits and four walks with a pair of strikeouts. Conrad pitched the sixth inning allowing four runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk.
Brink went 1-for-3 with a double and Conrad went 1-for-2. Tyson Antonen also drew a walk for the Bobcats.

Brandon Valley 7, Brookings 3

The Lynx took another early lead when Jackson Adams drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the first inning. Brandon Valley tacked on two more runs in the first, adding runs on a Carroll sacrifice fly and an RBI groundout by Carter LaBrie.

Zerr drove in a run with an RBI groundout in the top of the second inning before the Bobcats scored three runs in the top of the third inning. Jack Merritt and Sam Johnson singled to open the third and scored on a bunt single by Miles. Austin Clark drew a walk to load the bases in the next at-bat before Tate Helmbolt drove in a run on a fielder’s choice and Owen Schneider made it a 4-3 game on an RBI single.

The Lynx had too much offense, however, as J Adams hit a two-run home run in the top of the fifth and Chase Leary hit an RBI triple in the top of the sixth inning to cap the scoring.

Clark made the start for Brookings allowing seven runs (five earned) on five hits and five walks with five strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Antonen allowed a hit with a strikeout to get the final two outs of the sixth inning and Conrad allowed a pair of hits with a pair of strikeouts in the seventh inning.

Helmbolt went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI while Merritt, Johnson and Miles all went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Schneider went 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.

Sunday

Rapid City Stevens 12, Brookings 9

The Raiders took an early lead when Mason Brooks drove in a run with a single and took a 4-0 lead thanks to Brody Thompson’s solo home run and a two-RBI single by Brooks in the top of the second inning.
Will Waddell scored on an error to put the Raiders up 5-0 and Thompson’s two-run double and Ian Beer’s sacrifice fly gave the Raiders an 8-0 lead in the top of the third inning.

Helmbolt put Brookings on the board with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the third inning and it was the catalyst for a six-run inning. Clark drove in a run with a double and Brink and Johnson each drove in runs with a single to make it an 8-6 game.

Rapid City Stevens extended its lead when a run scored on Brink’s error and Beer drove in a run with a single but Clark got a run back by stealing home in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Thompson drove in a run with a double to make it an 11-7 game in the top of the sixth inning before Olmsted drove in a run with a single in the top of the seventh inning.

The Bobcats added a pair of runs on errors by Olmsted and Waddell in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Breck Wilson started the game for Brookings and allowed eight runs (five earned) on seven hits and four walks with a pair of strikeouts. Helmbolt threw four innings allowing four runs on nine hits and three walks with a pair of strikeouts.

Clark went 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, a walk and an RBI. Antonen went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a walk. Schneider went 1-for-3 with a walk, two stolen bases and a run scored while Brink and Johnson each had singles. Miles went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

Brookings 3, Rapid City Stevens 1

Schneider dueled with Luke Hanzlik for the first four innings before Addison Ronning put the Bobcats on the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning. Helmbolt scored on Beer’s error in the next at-bat before Brink drove in Merritt to put Brookings up 3-0.

Colten Morlang drove in a run for the Raiders in the top of the sixth inning but it was the only damage against Schneider, who allowed one run on six hits with 11 strikeouts over six innings to get the win.
Miles relieved Schneider in the seventh inning setting down the Raiders in order with a strikeout.

Ronning went 1-for-3 with an RBI while Helmbolt went 1-for-3 with a run scored and Brink went 1-for-2 with an RBI.
