BROOKINGS – A man reported he’d been stabbed – and then was arrested for making a false report, according to Brookings Police.
The incident was reported shortly after 11:30 p.m. Thursday, Assistant Chief Derrick Powers said.
“We were called up to the emergency room for an individual who had went up there with a stab wound to his arm,” Powers said.
The 27-year-old Brookings resident “had been at the bars and was in the downtown area (and then started) walking home,” Powers said.
The man said “he encountered several males and he became involved in a verbal confrontation with one of the males, which then escalated to a physical altercation, during which time this male stabbed him,” Powers said.
“Our officers went to the area (he) said that this had occurred … and were unable to locate any evidence of this altercation,” Powers said.
“We later had a follow-up contact with him and spoke with him further about the assault, about the wound that he had, during which time he had indicated he had cut himself,” Powers said.
The man was arrested for false reporting and transported to the Brookings County Detention Center.
