BROOKINGS — Photographer Brian Adams will deliver the annual Pulitzer Lecture at South Dakota State University. The lecture will take place at 7 p.m. March 23 in the University Student Union Hobo Day Gallery. The event is free and open to the public.

The Pulitzer Center is an award-winning nonprofit journalism organization dedicated to supporting independent international journalism that U.S. media organizations are increasingly less able to do. It partners with SDSU to connect students and the community with Pulitzer Center grantees.

The center’s educational initiatives provide students with fresh reporting from around the world, help them think critically about the creation and dissemination of news and inspire them to become active consumers and producers of information. The partnership includes an international fellowship for an SDSU student to report on an underreported issue with the center disseminating the fellow’s work.

Adams will deliver a lecture titled “Bearing Witness, a Life” on his life and career as a professional documentarian and the complex ways our identities shape how we see the world and the stories that come to us.

In addition to publishing two books, “I am Alaskan” and “I am Inuit,” Adams’ work has been featured worldwide in exhibits and publications such as The New Yorker, National Geographic, The New York Times, The Atlantic and many others. Adams currently is a founding member of Indigenous Photograph and The 400 Years Project and leads a mentorship program for photographers in Anchorage, Alaska.

Along with the public lecture, Adams will speak in classes March 22-23.

This year’s annual Pulitzer Center Campus Consortium program is funded by Karen Stuck, a native of Brentford and a 1966 SDSU graduate with a degree in journalism and home economics. She is retired and living in the Washington, D.C., area.

Joshua Westwick, director of the School of Communication and Journalism, affirmed the value of the Pulitzer Lecture to SDSU and the community.

“Our partnership with the Pulitzer Center allows us to connect our students and community with Pulitzer Center grantees whose work typically focuses on topics of global importance,” Westwick said. “We are thrilled to have Brian Adams on campus to discuss his work and professional experiences with our campus community and students.”
