Coffeehouse tips go to Brookings Backpack Project

BROOKINGS — The Mission of the Month at the Mission Coffeehouse in First Lutheran Church for July is Brookings Backpack Project.

The Brookings Backpack Project (BBP) was founded in 2009 by the Brookings United Church of Christ with the enthusiastic support of the Brookings Head Start.

Working with school staff and many community partners, BBP assists children and youth who are at risk of hunger by providing them with nutritious and easy-to-prepare meals and snacks for weekends and school vacations during the academic year.

By helping to sustain these students until school resumes, BBP not only serves their nutritional needs but also promotes their physical, cognitive and social development, and enhances their overall sense of well-being. BBP offers this service at no charge.

Service planned at Brookings Summer Arts Festival

BROOKINGS — The Brooking Summer Arts Festival will be hosting a non-denominational church service on Sunday, July 9, at 8:30 a.m. at the Pioneer Park Bandshell. Mark Johnsen, pastor from the United Church of Christ, will deliver the message.

Community members are encouraged and welcome to worship with artists, vendors, and festival patrons. Limited seating is available, so please consider bringing a lawn chair. Parking is not permitted in the park, but available nearby.

The Brookings Ministerial Association coordinates this service and will welcome a free will donation to be used to for community outreach.
