Brookings County gives go-ahead to bridge, culvert projects

BROOKINGS — It was a pretty quiet affair at Tuesday morning’s meeting of the Brookings County Commission, with the two biggest items, dollar-wise at any rate, being the approval of two road projects involving a new box culvert and a new bridge.

The bigger of the two projects, involving a new bridge a few miles east/northeast of Aurora on 482nd Avenue/County Road 27 between 213th and 214th streets, was awarded to Hollaway Construction of Parker for $1,528,691.25. That price came in roughly $41,000 less than Banner Associates estimated. There were eight bidders in all attempting to land the deal, with the most expensive bid hitting $2,544,106.05. A spring 2025 construction is likely, but that window is only preliminary in nature.

The smaller project involves the installation of a box culvert on 219th Street southeast of Aurora between 476th and 477th avenues. Timmons Construction of Brookings won that contract with a bid of $628,889.79 — approximately $111,000 less than what Banner Associates estimated the cost would be, so that’s another savings for taxpayers. Of the eight bidders, the most expensive proposal clocked in at $910,265.62. Work is likely to begin next spring or summer, but could kick off as early as this fall.

Commissioners OK’d both projects on voice votes.

Another item that received approval from the commission was a road salt contract with Neligh, Nebraska-based BlackStrap Inc. It was OK’d on a 5-0 roll call and gives the go-ahead to the county highway department to buy salt in bulk from BlackStrap on an as-needed basis at a price point of $76.39 per ton.

Lastly, commissioners approved, on a voice vote, giving Brookings Municipal Utilities permission to briefly close a portion of 213th Street in Aurora Township for work involving the installation of casing, raw water pipe and a fiber conduit. The closing to through traffic would affect the stretch between 34th Avenue and 475th Avenue.

BMU plans to publicize the closing prior to it actually occurring via infographics, social media and other avenues.
